President of the Russian Maritime Law Association assessed the risks of denunciation of the Russian-Norwegian treaty on delimitation of maritime zones in the Barents Sea
President of RUMLA Konstantin Krasnokutskiy in his comment for the prominent Russian news agency “Izvestiya” explained the possibility of denunciation of the treaty between Russia and Norway on the delimitation of maritime zones in the Barents Sea, which was recently assumed by the speaker of the State Duma.
“There is no provision in the document signed by Medvedev and Stoltenberg governing denunciation. In such a case the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties should be applied. Article 56 clearly states that a treaty which contains no provision regarding its termination and which does not provide for denunciation or withdrawal is not subject to denunciation or withdrawal,” said Krasnokutskiy.
